  7. Help us reach the Fringe: See “A Night with Nina Simone” at On Stage, March 27/28!

Scotland’s annual Edinburgh Festival Fringe is one of the world’s most prestigious theatre festivals. It is also one of the most expensive. For this reason, Shanghai’s Play the Spotlight Theatre needs your help to bring one of 2013’s most highly praised theatrical productions, Black Is the Color of My Voice, to the Fringe this August.

To reach our fundraising goals, On Stage and Play the Spotlight will present a two-night concert in March and a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to be announced at the end of February. 100% of ticket sales for A Night with Nina Simone will be used to take Black Is the Color to an international audience.

A Night with Nina Simone will feature the critically-acclaimed Campbell performing hits featured in Black Is the Color, as well as reveal new talent with some new, never-before-seen songs and duets.

  9. Shanghaiist Theater review: Holiday Hitch

[…] As predictable as the story may sound (and is): The dialogue is so well-written that it works perfectly for what the play wants to be, and the smart stage design and atmospheric lighting make good use of the limited space of Anken Green. All three actors show great talent, and while Garcia has most of the jokes on her side with her absolutely hilarious acting, Campbell and Maxim charm once more with their voices. We couldn’t help smiling throughout the play and left with a warm, Christmasy feeling.

    The final Verdict
Was it fun? The answer is a clear yes. The totally not representative scientific survey among three attendants (the musical hater, the musical lover, the one who doesn’t care) confirms: Everybody had a really good time, and if you wanna get into the mood for the holidays with Christmas evergreens and some good laughs, you don’t wanna miss this charming little Christmas tale.

  10. That’s Shanghai Guest Review: Holiday Hitch

Katy Roseland - co-founder of the Xuhui underground art space, Basement 6 Collective’s - attends opening night of Play the Spotlight`s new holiday musical comedy, Holiday Hitch’ and gives her thoughts.

[…] The casting was impeccable. Kevin Max!m and Apphia Campbell together have a chemistry that’s very rare.

Cecilia Garcia doesn’t sing but her energy was playful and fun. Every scene had at least one song and sometimes two which they worked in very well. […]

  14. Without a Hitch - Shanghai Family’s REVIEW

[…] Play the Spotlight Theatre’s new production of Holiday Hitch has enough holiday cheer for everyone. We caught the show, currently playing at the intimate rooftop space at Anken Green, for its first chilly Friday evening performance, as ever excited to be seeing some live theatre, with the added bonus of Christmas carols. To get everyone in the mood, there was mulled wine and cookies, and the aroma of cinnamon and spices filling the theatre.

Campbell and Kevin Maxim, who plays Dreamme, carry the singing beautifully. Both are professional performers, and their combined talent is impressive. Maxim’s rendition of “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” is a real show-stopper. Co-star and Shanghai newcomer, Cecilia Garcia, is a real ham who plays up her role as the rich kid who falls on hard luck. 15. Holiday Hitch - SHANGHAI247’s REVIEW

[…] It’s the music that is the high point of the show. The plot revolves around Dreamé and Michelle being undiscovered talents, so it’s fortunate that both of them are outstanding vocalists. All your favorite Christmas hits are there, and it’s a pleasure to hear them sung by some of the best voices in Shanghai.

If you’re like me, and the songs are pretty much the best part of Christmas, then this is going to make you a very happy theatre-goer and there’s nothing more to it. I defy anyone to watch Campbell’s rendition of O Holy Night or Maxim’s I’ll be Home for Christmas and remain unmoved.
